Are You Energetic & Enthusiastic To Help Children?
If the answer is yes then Dar es Salaam is the place for you. You are given the chance to help change children s lives by caring for them and teaching them English. You will need to use your practical skills in keeping the children active through teaching, arts and crafts and a range of sports, so get thinking! You can make a great difference to these children's lives which is much appreciated by everyone. You are situated around 7kms away from the centre of Dar es Salaam so not far for a quick swim in the ocean or a bit of sunbathing on the beach.

Why The Need For Volunteers?
These children are in real need of care, they don't know what it's like to have a mum and dad!  Volunteers have become an essential part of these orphans life. They need all the help they can get in all areas of life. Volunteers come and take part in activities with the children and it gives them motivation and goals to achieve in life. It is very rewarding to help these children as they are calling out for help.

Volunteers Activities

As a volunteer in the orphanage project you will be spending the majority of your time with the centres orphans. Activities usually consist of assisting the children with their class work, to stay clean & healthy, and to use their own intuition to create ancillary activities to take part in including arts and crafts and sports games. Volunteers will assist the children to school and teach them a variety of subjects including English. This project offers volunteers opportunities to serve the most destitute of children in Tanzania. Volunteers are expected to share their love, passion, and hard work to make a difference in the life of children who have been savagely deprived of parents’ love and support.  In your free time, you can explore local villages and nearby areas. Your help will be highly appreciated by children.

The Required Skills
You must be flexible, use your initiative and have plenty of enthusiasm to face the daily challenges your role will throw at you. A pro active attitude is essential for you and your project to gain the most out of one another. You must use all the skills you have to enrich your experience and to help leave a profound effect on your project. Most importantly it is essential for you to have a love for children and a commitment to the project.  Depending on your capabilities and initiative you may find yourself being invited to participate in other events not mentioned in the project specifications.

Local Facilities
These projects are situated in a suburb of Dar es Salaam which is the 2nd largest city in Tanzania.  It has all amenities you need including banks, post offices and supermarkets, cinemas & many more recreational activities. There is a good transport network of minivans (Daladala’s), as they are locally known, buses and plenty of taxis.

Trip Highlights

You will be able to help some of the most unfortunate children in Africa having lost their parents to HIV & AIDS. You will be based in Dar es Salaam which is the vibrant coastal capital of Tanzania. All attractions in Tanzania can be organised from Dar es Salaam whether it be trips to Zanzibar, a safari or a trek to the peaks of Mt Kilimanjaro.

Accommodation In Dar es Salaam
Your accommodation will vary from time to time, but you will most likely live with a local family or onsite at your project premesis. Many projects have rooms onsite. This gives you the best opportunity to experience the true African way of life from the inside and not as a ''tourist'' which only allows you to see the country on the surface.

We always try to accommodate you as close to your project as possible, so you are able to walk to work. This is not possible all of the time but there is a great alternative at hand, the ''DalaDalla'' or as we know it the mini bus. They are all over Tanzania so you will have no problem getting around.

Living In Tanzania
Tanzania officially called the United Republic of Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa. Tanzania is bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north and to the west is the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda & Burundi and to the south is Mozambique. To the east of the country lies the Indian Ocean. In the mountainous north of the country lies the highest peak in Africa, Mt Kilimanjaro.

Dar es Salaam is close to the equator and the Indian Ocean which means it generally experiences tropical climatic conditions. The weather is considered to be hot and humid all year round. It has an average annual temperature of 27°c. There are two distinct rainy seasons, the long rains which fall during the months of April and May & the short rains fall during October & November.

There are numerous different attractions in Dar es Salaam, including a wide choice of beaches and tropical islands to visit. The shoreline of Dar es Salaam is not particularly good for swimming however the beaches north of the city are excellent and are popular weekend getaways for the locals. Dar es Salaam has a few museums scattered around the city and also a wonderful botanical gardens. Boats to Zanzibar & Pemba islands run daily from the port and take anything from 1-3hrs. Zanzibar is a tropical paradise and a must see if you are in Dar es Salaam. Along with most developed cities in Africa, Dar has a variety of cuisine to choose from, cinema complex, good shopping facilities and some bars and clubs.
