![]() Why Not Go Where You're Really Needed? This project really gives you an insight into the HIV/AIDS epidemic that has ravaged Africa. Volunteers get the chance to visit the tropical paradise island of Zanzibar to visit patients in their homes. This is a truly brilliant opportunity for volunteers to gain insight into the 'real' African lifestyle and the problems certain communities are facing. These projects maybe extremely challenging but remember you are making a monumental difference too many people's lives. Why The Need For Volunteers? There is a constant need for volunteers at this centre to help with the ongoing programs the centre runs within the local communities. There is also a need for extra staff and, volunteers are always welcomed with open arms. There are numerous benefits volunteers bring to the project and the local community with all of their different ideas, equipment and donations. Volunteers also give the HIV/AIDS victims hope as they begin to realise there is outside concern helping the sufferers live a better life. Volunteers Activities As a volunteer in this group’s support project, you will support the HIV/AIDS infected women, men and children assisting them with the development of their self-esteem. The centre's main work is to visit these HIV/AIDS infected people at home and supply them with counselling and education. Volunteers teach about the importance of nutrition (e.g what kinds of foods to eat for a sufferer of HIV/AIDS) The project also teaches community members to take care of their own HIV/AIDS patients and to openly discuss both the consequences of the pandemic and ways in which you can prevent the spread of the disease. The centre also runs an educational program to stop the HIV/AIDS problems. Each day, the director of project and the volunteers discuss about the daily work and responsibilities the volunteers have. The Required Skills You must be flexible, use your initiative and have plenty of enthusiasm to face the daily challenges your role will throw at you. A pro active attitude is essential to gain the most out of the project. You must use all the skills you have to enrich your experience and to leave a profound effect on your project. Most importantly it is essential for you to show a commitment to the project. Depending on your capabilities and initiative you may find yourself being invited to participate in other events not mentioned in the project specifications. Local Facilities This project is situated in Stone Town which is the capital of Zanzibar. It has all amenities you need including banks, post offices and supermarkets, cinemas & many more recreational activities. There is a good transport network of minivans (Daladala’s), as they are locally known, buses and plenty of taxis. Trip Highlights You will be able to help some of the most unfortunate people in Africa who have contracted the HIV/AIDS virus. You will be based in Stone Town which is the vibrant coastal capital of Zanzibar. All attractions in Zanzibar can be organised from Stone Town whether it be spice tours, scuba diving or swim with Kizimkazi Dolphins. ![]() Accommodation In Zanzibar Your accommodation will vary from time to time, but you will most likely live with a local family. This gives you the best opportunity to experience the true African way of life from the inside and not as a ''tourist'' which only allows you to see the country on the surface. We always try to accommodate you as close to your project as possible, so you are able to walk to work. This is not possible all of the time but there is a great alternative at hand, the ''DalaDalla'' or as we know it the mini bus. They are all over Zanzibar so you will have no problem getting around Living In Zanzibar The earliest visitors to Zanzibar were Arab traders who are said to have arrived in the 8th century. For centuries the Arabs from Oman travelled with the trade monsoon trade winds to the Zanzibar Archipelago which consists of the islands of Zanzibar & Pemba. These were great stop off points to pick up slaves as the islands are fairly small and also easy to defend. The Arabs controlled most of coastal East Africa approximately 1000 miles of coastline stretching from modern day Somalia to Mozambique. Zanzibar experiences great weather all year round with the heat of the summer being cooled by the by the windy conditions resulting in pleasant sea breezes. As the island is situated near the equator the temperatures are favourable year round. The summer months range from December to March and winter begins in June until August. The rainy seasons in Zanzibar are from March to May (the heavy rains) and October to November (the short rains). In these periods the rain usually falls in thunderstorms in the afternoon and then dries up fairly quickly. Zanzibar is a tourist haven with so many activities to take part in and so many attractions to see. Stone Town is very well known for its popular Spice tours along with the national museum and the old slave market which lies in the heart of Stone Town. The Place museum is also open for tourists to walk around illuminating the lifestyle of the Sultan legacy in Zanzibar. Zanzibar is world famous for its tropical beaches most of which are situated in the north of the island. Kendwa &Nungwi are just two examples of these. You can organise everything from sunset dhow trips to snorkelling and scuba diving. Whatever it is you are after Zanzibar will offer it.
