![]() Do You Want To Be A Real Help? Kenya is a leading holiday destination with millions of tourists visiting every year to see the wildlife on display and to relax on one of many stunning beaches the country has to offer. Unfortunately all of this revenue injected in the country doesn't filter its way down to the people that actually need it. There is an alarming rate of children & babies being saved from the streets and taken to orphanages all over the country. Volunteer help is essential as there are more children being brought in on a daily basis than the centres can handle. Come and see for yourself and make a serious change in these unfortunate children's lives. Why The Need For Volunteers? The centres needs all the support it can get from volunteers to battle this rising problem. We are looking for volunteers with a love for children and more specifically nurses, nutritionists, occupational therapists, social workers & child psychologists. Ancillary to these needs the centres are requesting tangible products such as nappies, baby and normal blankets, and food donations. Volunteers Activities Volunteers will be required to work on an array of different areas within the children’s home. Most will be social care orientated enlighten children on their rights, encouraging and assisting them to speak out on injustice that has been inflicted upon them. Volunteers will also be asked to rescue and rehabilitate abandoned, neglected and abused children and give them support and care. Volunteers will counsel the traumatised victims and take them to hospital when the need arises. The Required Skills You must be flexible, use your initiative and have plenty of enthusiasm to face the daily challenges your role will throw at you. A pro active attitude is essential for you and your project to gain the most out of one another. You must use all the skills you have to help enrich your experience and to leave a profound effect on your project. Most importantly it is essential for you to have a love for children and a commitment to the project. Depending on your capabilities and initiative you may find yourself being invited to participate in other events not mentioned in the project specifications. Local Facilities Nyeri is one of Kenya’s larger towns and has most amenities you need including banks, post offices and supermarkets. There is a good transport network of local minivans (Matatu’s) as they are locally known, and plenty of taxis Trip Highlights You are given the opportunity to gain an experience to live and work in semi rural Kenya making a difference in the children’s centre and interacting with the local people. You are also a stone’s throw away from Mt Kenya, which is the second highest mountain in Africa. ![]() Accommodation In Nyeri Your accommodation will vary from time to time, but you will most likely live with a local family. This gives you the best opportunity to experience the true African way of life from the inside and not as a ''tourist'' which only allows you to see the country on the surface. We always try to accommodate you as close to your project as possible, so you are able to walk to work. This is not possible all of the time but there is a great alternative at hand, the ''Matatu'' or as we know it the mini bus. They are all over Kenya so you will have no problem getting around Living In Kenya Kenya shares borders with Tanzania in the south, Uganda in the west, Ethiopia in the north, Sudan in the northwest & Somalia in the north east. Nyeri is the provincial capital for Kenya's central province, located 150 km north of Nairobi and estimated to have around 200,000 residents. Nyeri enjoys a moderate climate, the sunniest and hottest time of the year falls between December and March where the mean temperature is 23°c. June & July are considered winter when temperatures can drop as low as 10°c, especially in the evenings as the town is in close proximity to high slopes of Mt Kenya. There are two rainy seasons, the first comes in April to May which is known as the long rains and then again in November when the short rains falls. Nyeri is a great base to discover the country. There are many attractions in the central province and Nyeri is a great spot to start exploring. Within close proximity is the 2nd largest mountain in Africa, Mt Kenya. Mt Kenya is an extinct volcano straddling the equator with point Batian (5200m) being the highest point. Mt Kenya's slopes are covered with bamboo, scrub and moorland giving way to the jagged rocks of the central peaks. Its U Shaped valleys offer glaciers and snow-capped peaks. The mountain plays hosts too many wild animals including the black leopard, elephants, black rhino and many highland hyraxes. Aberdare’s N.P. hosted Queen Elizabeth II whilst on her honeymoon.
